Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In Nigerian films, particularly those produced within the Hausa film industry, women are often portrayed in diverse roles that reflect societal views on gender, marriage, and family. These portrayals significantly influence public perceptions of women and shape social attitudes. Hausa films, with their wide audience reach, have become a critical medium for presenting cultural values, especially regarding the role of women in traditional and contemporary societies. Married women in Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, like in many parts of Nigeria, are likely to consume these films, and their perceptions of the portrayal of Hausa women in these films can influence their views on gender roles, marital expectations, and personal identity (Aliyu & Sani, 2023). While Hausa films often depict women as caregivers, wives, and mothers, they can also challenge traditional gender roles, offering more complex and empowered portrayals. The purpose of this study is to assess how married women in Sokoto North perceive the representation of Hausa women in films, particularly regarding their roles in marriage, family, and society. This analysis will offer insights into how film narratives shape gender norms and expectations for women in Sokoto State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The portrayal of women in Hausa films has sparked significant debate, with critics arguing that these films often reinforce traditional gender roles that limit women's autonomy, while others suggest that they offer more progressive depictions of women’s roles in society. However, little research has focused on the perceptions of married women in Sokoto North regarding these portrayals. Married women in this region may have different perspectives on the depiction of Hausa women in films, depending on how they relate to or challenge their own lived experiences and societal expectations. Understanding how these portrayals influence their views on gender roles, relationships, and their own identities is crucial for addressing the broader implications of media representation on gender equality. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating how married women in Sokoto North perceive the representation of Hausa women in films, identifying whether these portrayals empower or constrain them and how they influence their roles within their marriages and communities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the perceptions of married women in Sokoto North regarding the portrayal of Hausa women in films.

To examine how these portrayals influence the attitudes of married women towards their roles in marriage and society.

To explore the impact of these representations on the empowerment of married women in Sokoto North.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it examines how the portrayal of Hausa women in films affects the perceptions and behaviors of married women in Sokoto North, an area where traditional gender roles remain strong. Understanding the social impact of media representations on women’s empowerment is essential for filmmakers, policymakers, and gender advocacy groups seeking to address gender stereotypes and promote positive change. By exploring how married women engage with these portrayals, the study will provide insights into the role of media in shaping women’s self-perception, identity, and societal roles.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on married women in Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and will explore their perceptions of the portrayal of Hausa women in films. The scope will be limited to Hausa-language films and their depictions of gender roles within the context of marriage. A limitation of the study may be the difficulty in gathering a representative sample of married women, as cultural and societal norms may influence their willingness to discuss sensitive issues related to gender and marriage in a research context.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
